The tourism industry in the Young Shire supports 285 jobs and brings $25 million to the area each year.

It is now one of the biggest employers in the region, with 180,000 domestic visitors coming to the area each year, reports the Young Witness.

David Douglas, tourism manager at the Young tourism information centre, said: "These figures prove what a major industry tourism is in the shire and how it contributes to jobs."

Figures show that most visitors come from Sydney, with holidaymakers hailing from the area accounting for four in ten overnight domestic visitors.

A large number of visitors, 30 per cent, visit purely for holiday and leisure, with over half visiting family or friends and 22 per cent coming on business, said the website.

Mr Douglas said that the reasons most people come to Young is to experience the country lifestyle and engage in activities like cherry picking, visiting wineries and sampling local produce.

Also available to do in the area is panning for gold at the Lambing Flat Museum and Chinaman's Dam, which is a gardens with waterfalls and bird life.
