The United Nations (UN) claims millions of new jobs will be created over the next few decades thanks to the creation of alternative energy technologies, it has emerged.

A UN report revealed more than one million people now work in such industry and the organisation forecasts this figure could rise by 12 million by 2030.

The report - entitled Green Jobs: Towards Decent Work in a Sustainable, Low-Carbon World - was commissioned by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and claims the new jobs could include role in the expansion of recycling and environmentally-friendly vehicles.

It claims 6.3 million jobs should be made in the manufacturing, installation and maintenance of solar panels, while wind power should account for a further two million roles.

"If we do not transform to a low-carbon economy we will miss a major opportunity for the fast tracking of millions of new jobs," Achim Steiner, UNEP director told reporters.

The UNEP's mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment.
