Lying on CV is 'a risk'
13/06/2008(17:19)

Job applicants are being warned against following Apprentice winner Lee McQueen in lying or exaggerating on their CV.

Making false claims on a CV is a big gamble and could mean you get caught and fired, according to the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD), reports Online Recruitment magazine.

Deborah Fernon, a recruitment advisor at the organisation, told the publication there is nothing wrong with selling yourself in an application, but lying creates a big risk.

"Employers still place a high value on honesty. One little lie on your CV could be enough to leave you out of a job and with even more explaining to do next time you're in a job interview," she said.

She advised against school and university leavers using the BBC 1 show as a rule for their applications, saying honesty and genuine team-working are valued far more highly than the programme suggested.

A study by the Risk Advisory Group found 63 per cent of people lie at least once on their CV, reports Personnel Today.
