Nigg yard could bring jobs
19/09/2008(14:35)

The re-launch of one Highland oil site could potentially create more than 1,000 jobs, it has been reported.

According to the Ross-shire Journal, the Highland council is set to unveil a "master plan" aimed at unlocking the potential of the Nigg fabrication yard.

The authority is in talks with a decommissioning specialist and councillors will next week reveal findings of its report, which states if redeveloped the oil yard has the potential to provide an average of 800-850 jobs per year for the next 15 to 20 years.

Councillor Ian Ross, chairman of the Planning Environment and Development committee, is quoted by the publication as saying the report is "very positive" and recognises the potential for capitalising on the prime location and attributes of the site.

"The plan now gives us a very clear vision of how the site could be developed to maximise its potential and provide sustainable jobs for the Highland economy for the next 15-20 years," he explained.

Meanwhile, it was reported by the Northern Echo this week that Sedgefield firm Kromek is set to increase its workforce by three-fold over the course of the next 18 months.
