IT needs to do more to retain female workers
23/11/2007(13:43)

The IT industry should do more to ensure it is retaining top female talent, an industry expert has warned.

Maggie Berry of womenintechnology.co.uk has said that employers should do more to keep women in the IT industry, as more female staff are leaving then are joining.

Furthermore, Ms Berry, the director of the firm, added that there are not enough female workers in the sector.

"With women making up only 20 per cent of the UK technology workforce but accounting for 50 per cent of the UK working population it's obvious that the technology profession is missing out on a wealth of female talent," she remarked.

Ms Berry was speaking following an event aimed at encouraging women to consider IT as a viable career option.

Hosted by womenintechnology.co.uk and JP Morgan, speakers encouraged female IT workers to "think like a man" and "start the day without emotion".

It was reported recently by Personnel Today that sister publication Employment Review had discovered IT offers graduates some of the highest starting salaries.
