Car industry 'suffering skills shortage'
29/07/2008(15:32)

Australia's car industry is suffering from a lack of skilled workers, according to a new survey.

Research from the Australian Industry Group (AIG), which surveyed 150 automotive component manufacturers, found that almost a third of businesses had switched to producing other goods, reports Radio Australia.

Heather Rideout, chief executive of the AIG, told the news provider that "government must intervene before the industry collapses".

"We do believe that we need a strong package for the automotive industry that really pushes in the directions of more globalisation and facilitates restructuring, based on the investment in skills and innovation by the industry," she added.

It was recently announced by the Australian government that individual states are to be given delegated powers to select sectors suffering from a skills shortage and then sponsor workers to enter the industry.
