New group formed to save construction jobs
15/09/2008(13:11)

A new organisation has been formed to save thousands of construction jobs in Northern Ireland, it has been reported.

The Construction & Property Group is taking its fight to save workers, from both the industry's large companies and smaller firms, to the home of the Northern Ireland Assembly, according to 4NI.co.uk.

Representatives from the new group will tell minsters at Stormont that it is now the time to save the construction sector, which has played a key role in the development of the local economy.

Brendan Cunnane, a spokesman for the organisation, told the publication the main local banks are continuing to fail the local economy by demonstrating an inability to enter constructive dialogue despite some small-scale initiatives.

"It is surely not unreasonable to expect a higher level of pro-activity from the banks in response to a crisis that is nearing its first anniversary," he added.

The group is calling for a commitment from financial institutions that they will not take any steps to further destabilise the market.

It was revealed last week by the skills secretary that workers who have been laid off could be offered construction jobs under a new government scheme.
