Skilled workers 'in demand in south-east and London'
05/08/2008(16:07)

Skilled workers have been kept in work due to large projects in the south-east and London, according to an industry expert.

Gerwyn Davies, the public policy advisor for The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, said that "large scale commercial construction developments" have helped to keep workers employed.

He explained that regional variations had resulted in large drops in demand for skilled workers, but added that London is not suffering the same lack of jobs.

"London and the south-east with the Olympic project and infrastructure projects like Crossrail and Thames Link can offset the demand for private housing in particular," said Mr Davies.

It was recently estimated that Crossrail could create up to 30,000 jobs when construction begins on the rail network transformation.

Under the plan, tunnels will have to be built under central London and there will also be new stations built at Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel and Canary Wharf.
