NI needs ICT skills
07/03/2008(13:52)

Northern Ireland employment and learning minister Sir Reg Empey has claimed that the region's ICT sector depends on skills development and training.

Speaking at a conference hosted by e-skills UK, Sir Reg said that his department "recognised the importance" of the ICT sector in the local economy.

"Nowadays, virtually every company in Northern Ireland, large and small, uses IT for all sorts of business needs, from human resources to finance, from PR to marketing," he claimed.

There has never been a greater need for "increased skills", he added, stating that the employees should be given the opportunity to receive additional training while in the workplace.

In related news, David Evans, government relations manager for the British Computer Society, said that a number of industries are now becoming "IT sensitive", including the media and manufacturing services.

People working within these fields are having to become experts in IT, while those already claiming to be experts are having to "develop the deepest understanding of the sector".
