'Creative apprenticeships will provide hands-on experience'

Plans by the government for 5,000 apprenticeships with creative organisations will provide "a new alternative education" for those seeking employment in the sector, the Arts Council has claimed.

According to the organisation, the proposals, which feature in the government's Creative Britain: New Talents for the New Economy strategy, recognise the need to provide hands on experience in the workplace.

Senior strategy officer Nema el-Nahas said: "It gives real hands-on experience for the next generation of talent and a new alternative education rather than just being in the classroom or at university."

The Creative Britain strategy also includes plans for a World Creative Business Conference - an annual event to bring together world leaders in the creative and financial sectors and steps to protect intellectual property in the music industry.

According to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, two million people are employed in creative jobs and the sector contributes £60 billion a year to the British economy.
