New £200m medical centre for west Midlands
17/07/2008(15:32)

Up to 2,000 jobs could be created in the west Midlands at the Ministry of Defence's new medical centre.

The £200 million facility at Lichfield will house a combination of military and civilian trainees, medics and managers when it officially opens in 2010.

Jobs will be created over the next few years and a number of staff will relocate from London, Gosport and Halton when the medical facility is up and running.

According to the Ministry of Defence, it will cement the area as the "centre of excellence for defence medics".

Derek Twigg, the under secretary of state for defence, said that it will build on "existing partnerships" with the University Hospital Birmingham Foundation Trust and Birmingham City University.

"Lichfield is within easy travelling distance of central Birmingham, meaning we can take advantage of the benefits of proximity of clinical facilities, medical research and training," he added.

Earlier this week, the BBC reported that members of the Territorial Army had been wearing their military uniforms at their day jobs to increase the awareness of the force.
