A new strategy has been launched by the government to aid the UK manufacturing sector.
New Challenges, New Opportunities is set to provide £150 million of support for the manufacturing industry and aims to help businesses to take advantage of opportunities of a low carbon economy.
Other aspects supported by the strategy include supporting the skills of workers, realising potential opportunities overseas, improving technology networks and to change the image of the manufacturing industry.
It aims overall to help UK firms remain "competitive" in an "increasingly globalised sector".
John Hutton, business secretary, said that manufacturing was "central to the success of the UK economy".
"But we need to recognise that the global landscape is changing so we can help UK manufacturers stay ahead of the game. I want the UK to be at the forefront of opportunities opened up by the move towards a low carbon economy," he added.
Mr Hutton recently told the Times that up to one million "green collar jobs" could be created in the UK due to "bright growth prospects" in the green technologies sector.
