A new report has found that the number of chartered accountants in the UK has risen by 2.5 per cent over the last five years.
The Key Facts and Trends in the Accountancy Profession report by the Professional Oversight Board (POB) found that there are now 277,761 chartered accountants in the UK and Ireland.
Accountancy Magazine reports that there was a 3.1 per cent increase in the number of institute member accountants worldwide, with the numbers totalling 373,488.
The report also found that the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales remains that largest membership body for the industry.
Paul George, director of the POB, told the publication: "Once again, the report illustrates the strength of the UK accounting profession and its continued growth, reflecting the attractiveness of the profession to new recruits both in the UK and internationally".
A recent study by CarrersinAudit.com claimed that the accounting industry could see a "staffing crisis" within two year.
It found that 31 per cent of graduates will remain in the industry for less than two years, Accounting Web reported.
