Tidal farms 'could create jobs'
03/10/2008(14:47)

New jobs could be created by new plans for two tidal farms, according to reports.

Scottish Power Renewables is set to put in a proposal for the eco-friendly projects, which could power 40,000 homes and create hundreds of jobs.

The farms, which would be located in the seabed of Pentland Firth and the South of Islay, would have 20-turbines each, with a third project planned for off the Northern Ireland coast.

Keith Anderson, director of Scottish Power Renewables, comments: "The rapid technological advance of tidal power has been startling and is now allowing us to progress plans for substantial projects delivering major environmental and economic benefits."

If plans for the farms are passed, work on the 30-metres tall turbines could start in 2011.

Meanwhile, the £19 million North Lanarkshire Working scheme is aiming to help jobseekers in Scotland find employment, through a programme of training and support.
