A medical firm in Larne has announced it is to create more than 235 jobs, it has been reported.

CaridianBCT's County Antrim facility will be the subject of a £16 million expansion over the course of the next three years, according to the BBC news website.

The US firm makes blood collection and processing systems and Invest Northern Ireland has put in some £1.7 million support for the project.

Economy minister Arlene Foster told the news provider the investment is a major boost for the town and the nation's economy as a whole.

"CaridianBCT has set ambitious targets including increasing production at its Larne operation and more than doubling employment over the next three years," she added.

Managing director James McKelvey told the newspaper the firm's decision reflects its confidence the operation can continue to make a significant contribution to its global success.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, the firm's workforce will be taken to the 425 mark following the expansion.
