GMB lobbies govt over jobs
23/09/2008(16:55)

A union is launching a campaign to restore 28 jobs after a factory in York was closed down, it has been reported.

The GMB lobbied the Labour party today claiming there is a strong case for saving the factory, which shut in a mass closure programme, according to the Guardian.

Union bosses claim a survey of Remploy employees who lost their jobs found almost half the disabled workforce from the plant, which made chemical warfare suits, have yet to find another job.

The firm announced this March that it was to close 28 of its 83 factories citing it being more cost-effective to find jobs for disabled people in mainstream companies as the reason.

Phil Davies, the GMB's national officer, told the publication the government had treated the workers "disgracefully" adding he and dozens of union members have resigned from the party over the issue.

"This has affected thousands of workers but also their friends and families. There is a lot of bitterness over the way the government handled the closures," he added.

According to the GMB, it represents almost 600,000 across every part of the economy.
