IT professionals "on a par" with accountants

As the UK's businesses increasingly come to rely on IT, those working within the sector are likely to have a higher profile, according to one expert.
David Evans, government relations manager for the British Computer Society, said that a number of sectors, including the media and manufacturing, are "extremely IT intensive".
Consequently, people working within these areas are having to develop greater expertise in IT and have a "deeper understanding" of their sector, Mr Evans explained.
"This will inevitably change the profile of those working in IT, and through that the profile of the sector itself so that it is seen on a par with other professions such as accountancy and architecture," he commented.
However, Tom Hadley, director of external relations with the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, recently suggested that people studying degrees in IT are "learning the wrong things".
According to the expert, many people are graduating without the skills and knowledge required by employers.
