Amazon to unveil logistics centre - creating 2,700 jobs
16/04/2008(14:03)

Amazon.co.uk will open its logistics centre in Swansea today, creating 2,700 jobs over the next five years.

Some 1,000 jobs will be needed immediately and an additional 1,700 will be created before 2013, of which 1,200 will be permanent positions, reports the Financial Times.

The opening marks the largest single investment in Wales since its devolution in 1999, measured by job creation.

Spanning over the size of ten football pitches the centre is located at Jersey Marine, near Swansea.

Rhodri Morgan, the Welsh first minister, told the newspaper: "At a time when there's a lot of doom and gloom around, this is a shaft of light for Wales."

Before the opening there were concerns that the jobs would go to Polish workers, rather than local people.

However, the retail company has reassured residents that it will be using JobCentre Plus and local agencies to fill the positions and is "committed to recruiting local people".
