The Army can teach people skills which could be used as a stepping stone into another career, according to a leading military figure.
Major Charlie Mayo has said that both young men and women have a number of opportunities to "improve their skill" and "their trades".
He added that some of these skills are "vital" for progressing through a future career and also help people as they develop "through life".
"They can alternatively use it as a stepping stone into another career and use the skills and knowledge which they have gained about leadership; taking control , making decisions in relation to other people, and looking after other people," said Major Mayo.
Research for the British Army, undertaken by Opinion Matters and Tickbox.net, found that 42 per cent of people have no clear idea of the career path they wish to follow.
Also, 52 per cent of respondents were unhappy with their current job.
