Highways work could create new jobs
03/12/2008(13:30)

The Highways Authorities will share millions of pounds of funding to improve the management of the country's roads, which could create new construction jobs around the country.

According to the agency, the £9 million support will be spent on the maintenance of bridges and other assets to improve the service the department offers to the public.

Paul Clark, transport minister, announced the funding on Monday (December 1st) and said it would be in addition to the £23 million pledged earlier in the year.

Mr Clark said: "High quality local highways are vital to communities; connecting people with work, shops, services, families and friends."

He explained that that highways management is also about offering the public what they want from their local roads as well as engineering and finding the right technical solutions.

Meanwhile, BBC News reported this week that hundreds of science jobs could be created in a new research centre being built in Midlothian.

The £58 million centre is funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.
