Immigration rules to make recruitment "easier"
03/03/2008(17:07)

An industry body has suggested that changes to the UK's immigration system ought to improve the recruitment process.

Anne Fairweather, head of public policy at the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC), said that the organisation hoped the rules would "not have too much of an impact" on the recruitment centre.

"Highly skilled migrants will be able to assess whether they can work in our country from abroad and then look for work," she commented.

Overall, this ought to make the process "easier", the expert suggested.

However, the REC voiced its concern over the possibility that the new points system would place limitations on less skilled workers who have been granted work permits in the past.

Ms Fairweather said that this is of particular concern to those recruiting within the hospitality and social care sectors.

In related news, Alan Tyrrell, employment chairman and the Federation of Small Businesses, said that new regulations on the employment of foreign workers could see organisations expected to act as "immigration officers".

Mr Tyrell, who said that the businesses face "huge" fines if they make a mistake an employ someone illegally, argued that the immigration is a matter for the government, not the owners of small businesses.
