IT skills 'undervalued' in the UK
14/12/2007(17:08)

A new study by software firm Microsoft has revealed that knowledge of IT is low on the list of workplace skills priorities for UK businesses.

The firm surveyed the leaders of 500 businesses and discovered that IT knowledge was seen as the seventh most important employment skill.

However, Bill Gates, chairman of the firm, said that digital technology has ensured that most people have been changed into an "information worker".

"In almost every job now, people use software and work with information to enable their organisation to operate more effectively," he remarked.

The survey found that team working and interpersonal skills were perceived by the majority of business leaders to be the best attributes to have.

Earlier this week, Duncan Aitchison, partner at outsourcing advisory firm TPI, told Computing that there is a shortage of IT talent in the west and that firms may increasingly look to outsource these functions.
