1,200 jobs 'if prison goes ahead'
24/09/2008(17:02)

Hundreds of new jobs will be created if a new West Midlands prison gets the go-ahead to be built, it has been reported.

More than 1,200 jobs will be created in the jail proposed to be built next to the Featherstone Prison and Brinsford Young Offenders Institution, according to the West Midlands Express and Star.

The report states the prison would generate around 800 full-time and 400 part-time jobs as well as around £12 million for the local economy each year.

In addition, the building of the jail would create a further 150 construction jobs.

According to the government, the plans are essential for it to cope with the nation's increasing prisoner numbers.

However, the parish council is sceptical about the plan.

Councillor Frank Beardsmore, chairman of Featherstone parish council, told the publication: "It is great it is bringing 1,200 jobs but the concern we have is the traffic it will put on the A460. Unless the workers move into the village, we won't see the benefits of them."

Meanwhile, it was reported by the BBC last week that charity Nacro is preparing a joint bid with a private security firm to run two new jails with a construction firm and a drugs charity.
