Airbus factory 'to benefit UK economy'
04/08/2008(15:56)

The new Airbus factory could create 100,000 jobs in the UK's aerospace industry, according to the firm's president.

Costing £350 million, the new West Factory, which has been built alongside the cmpany's existing site in Broughton, North Wales, is set to be officially opened today.

The factory is set to assemble wings for the 555-seater A380 airliner and, according to Airbus, 129 orders have already been made.

Noel Forgeard, president of Airbus, said that the new West Factory is not only "extremely important" for the company but can also benefit the economy of the UK.

"The A380 programme secures and generates over 100,000 long-term jobs in the UK, and around 400 UK companies have already been awarded £7.5 billion worth of work on the programme," he added.

Aircraft manufacturer Spirit Europe recently revealed that it had protected 750 jobs at its assembly plant in Ayrshire after securing two new major contracts.
