Crossrail to create up to 30,000 jobs
30/07/2008(15:45)

Up to 30,000 jobs could be created as the transformation of London's rail network has received parliamentary approval.

The £16 billion Crossrail link will run from Heathrow in west London to Abbey Wood in the east and aims to relieve pressure on several of the Tube network's lines.

Under the plan, tunnels will have to be built under central London and there will also be new stations built at Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel and Canary Wharf.

Enabling work is scheduled to begin next year, with construction work starting in 2010 and a completion date pencilled in for 2017.

The project is estimated to create 30,000 jobs throughout the period, with up to 14,000 construction workers employed during peak times.

It was recently announced that a trial scheme to run tram-trains across Yorkshire may create up to 43,000 jobs in Huddersfield due the resulting regeneration from better commuter links, the Huddersfield Daily Examiner reported.
