Concern raised over IT skills shortage

Firms are increasingly like to outsource their IT operations because of a shortage of skills in the west, it has been claimed.
Duncan Aitchison, partner at outsourcing advisory specialist TPI, said that UK firms are more likely to look overseas for services as they will be able to dip into a wider skills base, Computing reports.
According to the expert, cost is "clearly significant" to businesses and the importance of the skills issue should not be underestimated.
"We generally do not have enough skilled talent in the west any more," he remarked.
"These days you have to be able to drive and manage projects and these are skills that firms are much less likely to outsource."
Tom Hadley, director of external relations with the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, said that there are plenty of people studying IT degrees in the UK, but they are learning "the wrong things".
