CBI welcomes minimum wage decision
06/03/2008(17:50)

The Confederation of British industry (CBI) has welcomed the government's decision to increase the UK's minimum wage.

From October, the minimum wage will be raised from £5.52 to £5.73 – a move described by the organisation as a "sensible balance".

John Cridland, deputy director general, of the CBI, said that the low pay commission has "taken the right stance" by not increasing the wage beyond the rate of growth in average earnings.

The commission also took the "prevailing economic climate" into account, he stated.

"At a time of considerable uncertainty for businesses and with economic growth already slowing, we welcome today’s moderate approach," Mr Cridland commented.

Meanwhile, the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) said that those within the recruitment industry ought to be aware of the changes.

Anne Fair-weather, head of public policy at the REC, said that it is "in the interests of good recruitment companies" that workers are paid the correct rate.
