Warning over IT skills shortage

The UK faces an IT skills shortage, according to a Labour peer who suggested that young people in the UK without such abilities will be "disadvantaged".
Speaking at a seminar sponsored by Syscap, Lord Mitchell, chairman of the e-Learning Foundation, said that people looking for work are likely to be competing against others from across the world.
Claiming that we live in a "flat and accessible world", Lord Mitchell said that it was vital that young people develop the skills they need.
"There are few jobs that don't require any IT so people without these skills will become increasingly disadvantaged," he commented.
Teachers and parents ought to encourage the use of IT both at home and in the classroom, he added.
Earlier this week, Tom Hadley, director of external relations with the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, said that although many people study IT degrees, few are learning the correct things.
