'Geeky image hinders IT recruitment'
07/05/2008(17:09)

A negative image of IT workers may be hampering the industry's recruitment efforts, research claims.

In a poll by IT recruitment specialist GCS, 40 per cent of people questioned said professionals in the sector are seen as "techie geeks" who lack social skills.

Only 17 per cent of respondents deemed IT to be a boring subject, suggesting the industry needs to change its image to attract more recruits, the company said.

"It seems we still have a long way to go before the message becomes clear," remarked GCS's managing director Chris Bartlett.

"The IT industry needs to take significant and swift action now to make the necessary changes to avoid a serious shortage of staff and ensure profitable growth in the future," he added.

Meanwhile sector analyst Gartner recently told Computer Weekly that the need for "innovative" IT within the banking sector will keep the IT job market buoyant.
