11/08/2008(15:36)

Plans for a new windfarm in Norfolk have been given approval by the government, which may see a jobs boost in the region.

The 315-megawatt Sheringham Shoal farm will be built off the Norfolk coast with construction due to start in 2009.

It will feature 108 turbines, making it the fourth largest windfarm in the UK.

Commenting on the news, energy secretary John Hutton said: "This new wind farm demonstrates our commitment to increase the amount of we generate from renewable sources."

He added that more companies are likely to develop windfarms in the UK as it is "one of the most attractive places" to invest in the technology.

According to the Telegraph, permission has also been granted for a 75MW onshore wind farm at Middlemoor in Northumberland.

Meanwhile, the Manchester Evening News recently reported that a new gas-fired power station in the north-west of England could provide up to 600 construction jobs in the region.
