More than £18.8 million was spent last year on skills development for engineering construction sector workers by the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB).
In a year described by the organisation as its most successful to date, 614 apprentices were registered with 158 companies - 300 per cent more than in 2006 - and 2,200 employees signed up to over 70 professional courses.
In addition, more than 600 staff were given ECITB training grants and 50,000 reached the required standard to receive and ECITB safety passport.
The number of centres approved to award ECITB qualifications rose to 62.
ECITB operations director Tony Featherstone, said: "These figures demonstrate the progress the board is making in equipping the industry with the necessary number of highly skilled workers for the long-term."
The figures follow news that the government has earmarked £65 million from its Train to Gain budget to help tackle skills shortages in the science, engineering and manufacturing industries.
