Rudd pledges $300m to jobs creation
20/11/2008(13:41)

The Australian premier has pledged $300 million to local councils to spend on projects to boost employment opportunities.

Kevin Rudd has announced a grants scheme to regenerate community buildings, repair swimming pools or upgrade bus shelters and tourism facilities.

The prime minister said he hoped the hundreds of millions of dollars would create thousands of jobs for trades people and engineers.

Mr Rudd urged local mayors to start spending the monies straight away in a speech at the Australian Council of Local Government in Canberra's first meeting.

"The purpose of this action is to build local infrastructure and to help support local economies and jobs during the global financial crisis," he added.

Meanwhile, PSnews reported this week that thousands of new jobs could be created by the government's support for the North South Wales Tourism Strategy.

Jodi McKay, tourism minister, is quoted as saying the region has goals to create 23,000 new jobs by 2016.
