Recruitment industry reports rise in jobs
09/04/2008(18:18)

The recruitment industry has reported a rise in the number of permanent appointments made last month.

A report on March's job from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG described the increase as "modest", but it is an improvement on February's slight decline in appointments, reports Abeceder.

A "brisk" increase in the number of temporary workers finding jobs shows that employers are still favouring the flexible employment option.

Helen Reynolds, acting chief executive officer for the REC, told the website: "The modest rebound in permanent placements suggests that the labour market appears to be holding up.

"Demand in other industry sectors such as engineering and construction shows no sign of slowing. This suggests to us that job losses on the scale of the dotcom crash in 2001 are far from likely."

Alan Nolan, the director at KPMG, reiterated that demand in the engineering and construction sectors are still high.

The skills shortage in the construction industry has recently been described as reaching a "serious" level.
