Manufacturing industry 'extremely viable'
08/08/2008(15:25)

The UK manufacturing industry is being kept strong by exports, according to an expert.

Peter Rogers, practitioner team manager for the Manufacturing Institute, has said that UK businesses are at an advantage over those in emerging economies where rising oil prices, environmental concerns and labour costs are hitting them hard.

The is a "growing consumption" in these markets for UK manufactured goods, according to Mr Rogers, giving businesses a "strong foothold" in markets.

"Looking at the total cost of acquisition, UK manufacturing is once more extremely viable – giving a much needed boost to the domestic sector and its supply chain," he explained.

The latest Confederation of British Industry's Regional Trends survey found that manufacturing confidence had dropped across the UK.

Volumes of orders nationwide have remained unchanged over the last two quarters, with export orders helping to limit any slowdown.
