People working in human resources (HR) for the local government are receiving salaries of £100,000 or more.
At least nine council HR chiefs said they earned six-figure salaries last year and justified it by saying they has delivered value for complex organisations, reports Personnel Today.
One official, Alan Warner, who is corporate director for Hertfordshire county council, took home over £146,000 last year, topping the 'rich list'.
Mr Warner was closely followed by Northamptonshire council HR director, Hilary Jeanes, who took home £135,000.
The average salary for a HR director in the private sector last year was £76,264, reports Personnel Today.
Gillian Hibberd, corporate director at Buckinghamshire county council, who earned £101,568 last year, defended her earnings: "My organisation has an annual turnover in excess of half a billion pounds and employs more than 14,000 people.
"Comparable organisations in the private sector would undoubtedly attract similar or higher levels of salary for similar roles."
The information on the public sector worker's salaries was gained under the freedom of information act by the Taxpayers Alliance.
