Despite its importance the logistics sector is one of UK industry's "best kept secrets", it has been claimed.
According to sector skills council Skills for Logistics the industry is the fifth largest in the country employing around 2.3 million people.
The sector offers a wide range of opportunities from warehouse staff to chief executives of multimillion pound logistics organisations, explains Dr Mike Jackson, the organisation's acting chief executive.
"There is something for people of all ages, gender, ethnic group and ability. However, as a sector that is so crucial, logistics is inadvertently one of UK industry's best kept secrets," he added.
Skills for Logistics is working to raise the profile of sector, including encouraging more women to play a part in the industry, Dr Jackson continued.
According to the Labour Market Profile, the UK logistics sector has a 29 per cent female employment rate.
The sector includes workers involved with the moving, handling or storing of goods and the wholesale industries.
