10/10/2008(15:51)

The Heart of Hawick project will contend for a national enterprise award next week, it has been reported.

According to Hawick News, the regeneration project has been shortlisted for an Enterprising Britain award after bringing hundreds of new jobs to the area.

The project's business manager Lindsay Wood will attend the ceremony in Downing Street where he will fly the flag for the complex, the report notes.

Speaking to the local newspaper, Mr Wood paid tribute to the "entrepreneurial spirit" and achievements of those involved.

"Through this year's competition I've been able to meet many inspirational people who are driving the economic and social transformations of the places in which they work and live," he added.

According to the publication, the arts and culture-led project transformed the town's west end and created a new cinema and scores of tourism jobs.

Meanwhile, it was reported by the North West Evening Mail that a bid to green up the Lake District's tourism industry could create new jobs in the region.
