Retail staff 'could benefit from training in school'

Staff entering the retail sector could benefit from having required skills developed whilst in school, according industry specialists.
Liz Titcomb and Liz Bennett, staff trainer and retail director respectively of cosmetics firm Lush, said that companies would benefit if employees already had an idea of the skills "that are needed in the work place".
They add that people may have picked up experience and skills from previous jobs but those entering the industry straight from school may lack knowledge, which could lead to the loss of "time and money" to teach these people "on the shop floor".
"Being a retail business, we would definitely appreciate more time being spent on leadership in education - as we focus heavily on this in our training, so it'd be highly advantageous if staff already had an idea or the skills in place," said Ms Titcomb and Ms Bennett.
The National Employer Skills Survey 2007 found that 37 per cent of employees in England had received no training over the past year.
