20/02/2008(14:21)

Asda is set to create over 9,000 new jobs this year by expanding stores and opening new supermarkets.

The company says the employment drive is the biggest it has performed this decade and will occur over the next 12 months.

Between ten and 12 new superstores and ten new Living stores will be opened, with 12 existing stores being extended.

Of the 9,000 jobs, 7,000 will be created in the new store openings and a further 1,500 will be throughout Asda direct and its Home Shopping division.

In addition, expansion of the company's pharmacy services will create 500 new posts with the introduction of pharmacies in 50 stores.

Overall the expansion will create an extra 800,000 sq ft of space, with an investment of around £400 million for the Walmart owned company.

Judith McKenna, chief financial officer at Asda, said: "This major investment demonstrates our on-going commitment to bringing low prices and fantastic service to even more people across the UK."

The company has recently reported that it has exceeded its sales and profit predictions for last financial year.
