Over 70% of UK workers 'want legal right to paid training'

A new survey has found that over seven in ten UK employees would favour the legal right to paid leave from work for training.

The recent YouGov survey by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and Unionlearn found that 71 per cent of people favoured the move.

Personneltoday.com also reports that 53 per cent of respondents would be likely to use the opportunity if it was introduced.

The strongest supporters of the initiative was found to be people aged between 18 and 24, with four out of five saying that employees "should have a legal right" to be able to request paid time off to embark on training.

Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary, told the website that business groups "continue to moan about the lack of skills" possessed by their workforce.

"The government must ensure that any new right to request training is strong enough to make a genuine difference," he added.

Dilys Robinson, a principal research fellow at the Institute for Employment Studies, recently said that employers can "benefit" from providing their workers with incentives.
