Engineering staff 'still sought after'

Staff for engineering jobs are still sought after, despite the current economic climate, it has been claimed.
According to a study conducted by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), 62 per cent of the companies it surveyed are planning to recruit in the future as a result of expansion, reports theengineer.co.uk.
Civil engineering firms expect to boost their workforce the most, with 90 per cent stating that they will be seeking new staff, compared to 78 per cent in energy, 73 per cent in defence and aerospace, 72 per cent in electrical and 70 per cent in the electronics sector.
Speaking to the news provider about these findings, Robin McGill, chief executive at the IET, notes: "Although economic predictions are becoming increasingly pessimistic, engineering and technology is a vibrant, expanding sector which is creating new jobs and there is a strong demand for new skills."
He adds that the profile of engineering jobs will have to be increased among young people to ensure that there will be enough suitably-qualified people to meet demand.
In related news, 24dash.com reports that a Brownhills-based engineering company is doubling in size following a £50,000 grant from the Business Link in the West Midlands Access to Finance programme.
