Concern over engineering opportunities for women
17/12/2007(17:04)
A new report has indicated that there is a great deal of inequality within the science, engineering and technology sectors.
The study conducted by the UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology revealed that women account for 24 per cent of the workforce in these sectors, Onrec.com reports.
However, the number of women working in the three industries increased from 22.5 per cent in 1993 to 24.1 per cent in 2004, according to the news provider.
Commenting on the findings, Annette Williams of JIVE, a national partnership led by the centre, said that although things appear to be "changing for the better", more needs to be done to encourage women to move into the sector.
"These figures should be a real wake-up call for employers, careers professionals and key figures from within industry in the UK because we simply can't afford to continue overlooking this vast untapped workforce," she remarked.
The UK Resource Centre was established in 2004 and is funded by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills.
