Plans for 'energy coast could create 16,000 jobs'
24/07/2008(15:44)

A new plan has been revealed to transform the coast of Cumbria and create up to 16,000 jobs.

John Hutton, the business secretary and MP for Barrow and Furness, revealed the proposals to create an "energy coast" and boost the overall economy of the region.

Under the plan, a new reactor will be build at Sellafield, £100 million will be invested in a new hospital and training facilities will be developed along the coast for nuclear energy and educational establishments.

Mr Hutton said that the government is "doing all it possibly can" to reap the dividends of a switch to nuclear, "which is going to happen".

"The UK, like other countries around the world, is getting into a nuclear renaissance and given that west Cumbria is the home of the UK nuclear industry, we've got a tremendously exciting future ahead of us," he added.

It was also recently announced that a planning application to transform Birkenhead docks with shops, offices and residential developments has been lodged with local planners, the Liverpool Daily Post reported.
