'Wider approach needed for talent management'
21/05/2008(13:09)

Human resources (HR) professionals and businesses need to adopt a more flexible approach towards talent management if they are to cope with the shifting needs of employees, a report has claimed.

According to a study of 58 of the world's leading employers by Deloitte, the 25 per cent of firms that had adopted a business-wide talent management programme - rather than one led purely by HR - generally saw more success with the strategy, Management Issues reports.

Furthermore, the combination of an ageing workforce and the changing expectations of employees will see the global talent pool reduced by 13 per cent during the next 40 years, increasing the need to adopt a wider approach to talent management, Deloitte claims.

"Talent management strategies will need to be deployed more broadly and extend way beyond individuals in leadership positions," said Anne-Marie Malley, author of the research and a partner in Deloitte's human capital consulting practice.

"Our study found that there is mixed levels of uptake of the more advanced talent management strategies that will become a necessity if you want to continue to attract, engage and retain the best people," she added.

Meanwhile, a study by think-tank the Adecco Institute recently concluded that HR must adopt a new role if it is to successfully manage the talent of skilled workers as more opportunities arise for employees to work across the globe.
