Golfing development to 'boost Merseyside tourism industry'
18/04/2008(17:13)

A new golf academy could provide a number of jobs within the Merseyside tourism industry.

The region is set to become the home of the first residential PGA golf academy in the UK – a development which is sure to attract increasing numbers of visitors to the area and boost the tourism industry, reports the Liverpool Daily Post.

A 62-room hotel has already opened at the Formby Hall Golf Resort and Spa, with the academy to follow within the next month.

The £10 million development will boast digital teaching systems and leisure and spa facilities.

Speaking to the newspaper about the effect the academy and hotel will have on Southport's tourism industry, Matthew Allen-Chilman, the new head of golf at the resort, said that it would furnish the region with much-needed top-class accommodation.

"Now, as the top golf destination, the area will realise its potential," he added.

"With the golf complex here fully open, with the superb courses and now with first-class accommodation the signs are for a massive golf boom throughout the region."

The tourism industry in Merseyside is already enjoying a boom due to the Capital of Culture celebrations in Liverpool, which are being held throughout the year.
