New contracts for Gateshead firm
23/06/2008(17:00)

A Gateshead firm has secured two new contracts worth £2 million in total, which will see it repaint two major ships.

Protective coatings firm Pyeroy will give two Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships a new lick of paint, reinforcing its strong trade links with the British forces, reports news provider nebusiness.co.uk.

The firm says that the work could create up to 30 new jobs, as its own team may not be large enough to complete jobs of this size.

Jack Hayton, director of Pyeroy’s marine division, told the website that the firm had won the "very prestigious contracts" against some tough competitors, who were also vying for the job.

He continued: "We have a long-standing relationship with NSL and are proud to be associated with them and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary."

Pyeroy estimates that it will take six months to complete the two contracts and work will be undertaken in Birkenhead by its marine division North West Shiprepairers & Shipbuilders.

The Gateshead-based firm was founded in 1973 and now employs more than 800 people.

It operates in the UK and Ireland as a marine and industrial painting contractor and boasts sales of nearly £50 million per year.
