IT students learning the "wrong things"
05/12/2007(17:07)

There is a skills shortage within the UK's IT sector because students are being taught the "wrong things", one expert has claimed.

According to Tom Hadley, director of external relations with the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), although there are a number of people studying IT degrees, many are not learning the required skills.

"Too often we see people coming out of university without exactly the right skills and knowledge employers are looking for," he commented.

Businesses need to have a greater input in such matters, he argued, adding that firms could be more "proactive" in encouraging young people to enter certain careers.

Earlier in the year, the Confederation of British Industry warned that there is a lack of basic skills among young people in the UK.

Susan Anderson, director of human resources policy at the organisation, said that the country needed to focus on "getting the basics right".
