'Logistics sector adapting for women'
30/05/2008(17:20)

Although there "is still a long way to go" the logistics sector is striving to appeal to female workers, an industry expert has claimed.

Dr Mick Jackson, acting chief executive of Skills for Logistics, said the industry has adapted to attract more women by offering flexible working practices and developing female-friendly working environments with better social facilities such as creches, gyms and canteen areas.

"There are more child-friendly careers with shift patterns that fit around schooling such as delivery drivers … or warehousing roles," he added.

According to the Labour Market Profile, the Greater London logistics sector has a 29 per cent female employment rate compared to a 45 per cent female employment rate for the region as a whole.

The report concludes that this picture supports the historical image of the industry being dominated by men.

Skills for Logistics is the Sector Skills Council for the industry and works alongside companies involved in moving, handling or storing goods.
