IT workers in high demand
11/02/2008(16:06)

A skills shortage in IT has been highlighted by a recent survey, which shows the shortages are at the highest level for ten years.

The National Computing Centre (NCC) Benchmark of Salaries and Employment Trends in IT survey showed that the shortages are at 6.8 per cent, compared to 4.2 per cent last year.

Most companies said that the issue was a recruitment one rather than a retention issue as 73 per cent planned to get new skills by re-training existing staff.

An expert from NCC said that companies should be prepared for extras spending on recruitment.

"With some skills moving into shortage, employers should be planning and budgeting for how best to acquire these skills now. It is an unwelcome message but they should be prepared for the extra cost."

IT workers with experience in Oracle, SAP, .Net, web development and project management skills will be in high demand due to the shortages.

While pay remains quite steady the number of employees receiving performance related bonuses has soared from six per cent to 44 per cent, with pay outs being on average 7.5 per cent to 8.3 per cent.

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation found that for every IT vacancy there are only five people training to fill it, causing salaries to rise by £100 per week, reports the Information Age.
