Rural jobs 'safer in Oz'
13/10/2008(15:32)

Rural jobs in Australia are more certain than urban positions during the economic crisis, it is being claimed.

Analysts maintain that workers in the country are likely to have better job security than their city counterparts during the financial uncertainty, it has been reported by ABC News.

The news provider claims that rural skills shortages are likely to continue despite the current forecasts of higher overall unemployment.

It adds the low Australian dollar is likely to increase demand for goods like processed food.

David Edwards, from Drake International, believes skills shortages in the mining industry will continue for another year.

He adds that as new projects are examined for viability, reduced resources prices and lower forecast of demand could mean the projects look less viable and may be delayed or put on hold, "but that's not an issue in the short term".

"There is still plenty of work, skills shortages exist and there are many projects going on," he continued.

Meanwhile, it was reported by the news provider last week that workers laid off from Teson Trims have been offered new jobs.
